Energy efficiency

For a number of years, Sofiprotéol has worked to improve the energy efficiency and environmental performance of oilseed and protein crop farms. Buoyed by its experience, the Group is now a partner in the Energy and Climate Plan, launched by the French Ministry of Agriculture.

Sofiprotéol is a partner in the French Ministry of Agriculture’s Energy and Climate Plan

Committed to improving the energy performance of its farms, the French Ministry of Agriculture launched an ambitious Energy and Climate Plan in 2008. In particular, the plan calls for :

  • 100,000 energy audits of farms by 2013,
  • investment aid to farmers’ energy conservation and energy production.

A “Progress Procedure” for the environment

Since 2007, Sofiprotéol has been working to improve Diester’s energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its production activities.

Dubbed “Progress Procedure”, the program covers the entire biodiesel production chain, from the agricultural phase (grain production) to the industrial phase (e.g., product transport, processing, and storage). Research projects are conducted by Cetiom.

Sofiprotéol has signed an agreement with the French Ministry of Agriculture to extend “Progress Procedure” principles across the entire vegetable oil and protein industry.

ADEME confirms the environmental advantages of biodiesel

Following the Grenelle Environment Round Table, ADEME published a study confirming the  environmental advantages of rapeseed biodiesel over fossil fuels. Using rapeseed biodiesel in place of diesel would lower France’s greenhouse gas emissions by 59%. The figure rises to 73% with sunflower biodiesel.

This analysis fully satisfies the sustainability criteria defined in the Renewable Energy directive. In particular, this directive requires biodiesel to reduce its CO2 emissions by 35% as compared with traditional fuel. This rate is expected to rise to 50% in 2017.
