Seeds and biotechnology

Improving oilseed and protein crop yields is a strategic focus for the industry. For that reason, Sofiprotéol invests heavily in seeds and biotechnology.

The quest to improve crop yield is a critical subject in terms of innovation and a sensitive social issue (particularly given the debate on genetically modified organisms). Sofiprotéol aims to address the needs of the oilseed and protein crop industry, while supporting a sustainable agri-food sector.

It’s a responsible approach that requires significant investment. Sofiprotéol is involved in 2 ways :

  • supporting research,
  • acquiring shareholdings in seed companies.

Supporting research

Sofiprotéol supports research programs in selection and molecular biology.

In 2008, Sofiprotéol created a support fund for oilseed research (FSRSO). The goal is to finance companies that specialize in selecting and producing seeds (peas, fava beans, lupins) that help increase yield per hectare while remaining compatible with sustainable agriculture.

Since 1997, Sofiprotéol has been a shareholder in Biogemma, a company that specializes in biotechnology. The Group also supports Genoplante, a plant genomics research program designed to improve the yield, disease resistance, and quality of plant species.

Shareholdings in seed companies

In coordination with financial company Unigrains, Sofiprotéol holds shares in key companies within the oilseed and protein crop industry, such as :

  • Euralis Semences,
  • Limagrain,
  • RAGT Génétique,
  • Serasem (InVivo group).
